Nihilo: Dum spiro spero
02/05/14 || Cobal
There’s quite a few albums that I honestly consider a miserable waste of my precious time. In fact, when an album sucks gorilla ass during the first three tracks—that of course depending on the case, I most likely won’t listen to the whole thing at all, but rather some fragments here and there in search of something worthy to pay attention to. There are other cases though, in which even if I’m about to take such measure on some record, something keeps me listening and eventually I end up listening to every second of the music.
These people deploy death metal of the likes of Deicide and Vital Remains during the initial tracks. I personally enjoy such approach, but I think I speak on behalf of many when I say no one wants/needs another Benton-wannabe bunch of idiots playing the same freaking formula over and over. Happily for me, “Dum spiro spero” is the kind of album that keeps the best for the end, and it gives you some small doses as it unfolds. Those hints kept me listening for almost an hour, as I reckoned something good was coming. After some tracks ‘twas obvious that these people can slow things down and go for a most dismal sound. Death metal acts normally can’t take the time to write a whole 20 min nightmare track without rushing towards the end. I applaud this.
Love the twisted-Neverland-like landscape on the cover art, by the by.
Cheers.
7,5/10: Replay.
After going thru that crap, you most likely wanna read something way more interesting. You do, admit it.
